What does “MdP” and “F” for Maltese coins mean?
The Maltese euro coins are minted by Monnaie de Paris, the French Mint.
Monnaie de Paris is responsible for the entire manufacturing of all euro coins from France, but 30% of the activities also exist in minting foreign coins.
The coins of Cyprus, Malta, Andorra and for example Thailand are minted there.
Almost all foreign coins are minted at the Pessac (Bordeaux) plant. These are given the distinctive Horn of Plenty as a mint mark. Hence the abbreviation ” MdP ” mint mark.
However, for a few of years, the 2nd factory of Monnaie de Paris, Hotel des Monnaies in Paris, is minting part of the Maltese coins (again) (only the BU sets). These then carry the “F” mint mark.
